Half million U.S. homes lack functioning plumbing in 21st century

(New York Times, “A Toilet, but No Proper Plumbing: A Reality in 500,000 U.S. Homes,”By SABRINA TAVERNISE, SEPT. 26, 2016)

“Nearly half a million households in the United States lack the basic dignity of hot and cold running water, a bathtub or shower, or a working flush toilet, according to the Census Bureau.”

As the Times profile of one woman indicates, many of these households (note households, not persons – many more than 500,000 people are living in these conditions) that cannot afford septic tanks simply run piping from their toilets into the woods.
